The Food Project

Background

Many young people from low income families in Oaxaca need and receive support so they can attend school. However, in too many instances teachers reported that many of these children were falling asleep during school time. In Oaxaca this is cause for expulsion. Clearly, the children were not receiving the regular nutrition they needed in order to be physically ready to learn.

Project Information

The Project

CANFRO provides a hot meal 5 days a week, year-round (except in Christmas Week and Holy Week) for 50 – 70 children at El Centro de Esperanza Infantil A.C./The Centre of Hope for Children, located at Crespo 308 (founded by the U.S. organization Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots).

Outcomes

Regular nutritious meals give children and youth the energy they need to participate fully in school.
