Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C.

Pursuing a high school education requires paying for books, supplies, inscription fees and
uniforms. These and other costs often put dreams for many young Oaxacan women out of
reach. In 1997, Fondo Guadalupe Musalem, A.C. formed to facilitate access to comprehensive education and prevent school dropout among Indigenous and Afro-Mexican young women at the upper secondary and higher education levels in Oaxaca.

Along with financial assistance, scholarship holders come to Oaxaca for a weekend each month to attend workshops on topics such as critical thinking, women’s rights, empowerment against gender-based violence, photography, film debate, sexual health and academic tutoring in chemistry, math and physics, among others.

Fondo’s mission is “to strengthen the capacities of young women from rural, indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities with limited economic resources, so that they can continue their studies and achieve personal development based on ethical values, through a comprehensive training model.”
